Excerpt

“Ryan doesn’t like us being friends, either, does he?” I asked, maybe half an hour from home. It was a rhetorical question, but I wanted him to answer it.

Keith looked at me from the corner of his eye, making me aware that this was a subject he’d thought was closed. After a few minutes, he answered. “Ryan is your father’s son. Besides, he wants to protect you. Anyone who loves you wants to keep you away from me, as they should.” Once again, my mouth was hanging open. I turned all the way to him, pulling one leg up onto the seat.

“What the hell is wrong with you? Keith Hale, almighty Keith Hale, the most I-don’t-give-a shit-about-anyone, I-can-get-any-girl-I-want-by-snapping-my-fingers, Keith Hale is, in fact, a fake.” He looked at me, surprised. “Yeah, a fake. You don’t have a drop of self-esteem. You were supposed to be the most confident person in the world, yet you keep giving me that cryptic, rehearsed shit. And, yeah, I can cuss. I just didn’t feel like it, before.”

Keith swerved the car to park on the side of the road, which made the car behind us honk. He turned it off and got in my face, anger pouring from him.

“Is that before/after shit I don’t want, Skylar. There is no before. We’re still not friends, got it? I can get any girl I want. I could get you if I wanted, but I don’t.” The last word hung between us for a few seconds. I should have been mad for what he said, like some pathetic girl who’d fallen for him that easily, but, sadly, I was just hurt that he wanted anyone other than me.

Crazy About Love by: Cassie Mae

Crazy About Love is the third book in the All About Love series. It can also be read as a standalone.

Crazy About Love revolves around Theresa Jones and Alec Tucker's story. Having pined for Theresa for years, Alec has finally settled for being only her friend. No matter what, he is still there for her whenever she needs him. So when Theresa is in need of a man for her Valentine's Day auction, he is ready to step in.

When Theresa finally realizes her feelings for Alec and plans on making a move things don't go exactly as planned. Before she even has a chance, someone else steals him away for the night.

The story was not only told through jumps from the present and flashbacks from the past but also in alternating POV's. The first half of the novel being Alec's story and the second half Theresa's story. I was not a fan of this. Some of the parts of Alec's POV were repeated in Theresa's POV, which left me feeling as if I was reading the exact same thing but in someone lesses head. I felt that the alternating POV's didn't do anything but bore me and make me loose any sense of connection I was beginning to feel.

The premise and plot of the story was actually intriguing but the fact that I was reading in the present for one chapter and reading a flashback in the next throughout the entire book just threw me off. I just wanted to focus on what was currently going on present day instead of the reoccurring flashbacks. The novel really did have potential but I just didn't, and couldn't, get into the jumps from present day to flashback.

Summary from Goodreads:

Single again on Valentine’s Day, struggling actor Alec Tucker agrees to help out his longtime friend—and unrequited love—Theresa Jones by filling in as one of the bachelors for her company’s charity auction. Alec figures it couldn’t hurt to meet someone new. Still, working with Theresa reminds him of all the reasons he never got over her. So it feels a little bittersweet when, out of nowhere, a beautiful young street artist buys a date with him for a whopping four grand.

Little does he know, Theresa’s had a major change of heart. She’s crushed when someone else wins a date with Alec—but she isn’t going down without a fight. After a pep talk from her best friend, Theresa makes a desperate move that goes against her better judgment . . . and things only get crazier from there. But with Alec ready to move on and Theresa afraid she’s pushed him away for good, maybe a little crazy is exactly what they need—before they both miss their shot.

The Memory Book by: Lara Avery

The Memory Book is not a novel I will forget anytime soon.

The Memory Book mainly revolves around Samantha McCoy (a.k.a. Sammie), who recently found out that she has a rare genetic disorder labeled Niemann-Pick Type C. Sammie always had a plan: becoming valedictorian, graduating high school, getting out of her small town, and going to NYU. She never planned having her memories and her health being stolen from her by a rare disease.

That is when the Memory Book is born: full of Sammie's notes to her future self - documenting both the bad and good moments in her life. It's where she writes about her perfect date with her longtime crush, Stuart, and where she openly admits that she misses her childhood friend, Cooper. Through a mixture of journal entries, guest posts, and fond memories, readers will be able to fall into this novel and experience the full story of a strong and passionate girl who learns to live fully and love it passionately even if it's not planned.

The Memory Book is something I both enjoyed and disliked. The main character, Sammie, is portrayed as a girl who has controlled the majority of the aspects of her life; she plans her future and things have to be done/achieved in order for her future to be labelled as a "success" and in order to leave her small town. Throughout the novel, she kept pushing herself to fulfill her dreams, wishes, and plans but being left unable to achieve the majority of what she wanted to do. However, as the novel progresses she begins to open up and notice that sometimes the things that are unplanned are the most exciting and joy filled moments.

The writing really captured the essence of what was going on and how people react differently to a situation that is both life altering and heartbreaking. I felt that Lara Avery was able to portray such emotions, especially the last 15 pages, that definitely leaves readers falling apart and wanting to read and know more.

A few things I didn't necessarily enjoy reading had to be the love triangle and the focus being mostly on the love interests. I wished it didn't focus on Stuart and Cooper but more on the struggles Sammie was going through in her life and her overall family dynamic (i.e. how is it changing, wanting to spend as much time with her family as possible, ext.). It all seemed trivial compared to what is ultimately going to happen in the end. I just hoped for more with this aspect of the novel.

I would recommend picking up and checking out The Memory Book, it is definitely a novel that will move you and leave you feeling raw from the emotions portrayed within the novel.

Expected Publication:

Summary from Goodreads:

They tell me that my memory will never be the same, that I'll start forgetting things. At first just a little, and then a lot. So I'm writing to remember.

Sammie was always a girl with a plan: graduate at the top of her class and get out of her small town as soon as humanly possible. Nothing will stand in her way--not even a rare genetic disorder the doctors say will slowly start to steal her memories and then her health. What she needs is a new plan.

So the Memory Book is born: Sammie's notes to her future self, a document of moments great and small. It's where she'll record every perfect detail of her first date with longtime crush, Stuart--a brilliant young writer who is home for the summer. And where she'll admit how much she's missed her childhood best friend, Cooper, and even take some of the blame for the fight that ended their friendship.

Through a mix of heartfelt journal entries, mementos, and guest posts from friends and family, readers will fall in love with Sammie, a brave and remarkable girl who learns to live and love life fully, even though it's not the life she planned.

Excerpts:

ADAM:

I clutch my well-worn paperback of Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein close
to my heart. The doctor robbed graves, stealing body parts to create his
monster. I suppress a shiver. In a way, the transplant surgeon does the same
thing by harvesting a donor’s organs when they’re on the brink of death. If I
get prioritized on the list, I’ll be waiting for that poor victim to arrive.
Then I’ll steal his or her heart and with it, their life.

Then I’ll be the monster.

DARBY:

Images blur on a merry-go-round from Hell that spins faster with
each turn. Sleet pounding the windshield. Daniel fighting with the clutch and
brake. The truck’s headlights impaling us. Crunching steel. Daniel’s bloody
face.

Pain stretches from my
head, dragging its dirty talons down my neck and across my shoulders, ending in
cold numbness at my chest. Something presses my body down. I can’t move. I
can’t escape it.
