Review

The Betrothed is the first book in Kiera Cass' new YA duology.

Hollis Brite has obtained King Jameson's affections, after vying it for years. It should be a dream come true...but she soon learns that marrying a king and becoming a queen isn't necessarily the happily ever after she thought it would be. After meeting a commoner with the ability to truly see who she is, she finds it hard to turn away from him especially when he reminds her that she is more than what the court may think.

When I first heard about The Betrothed, I knew I just had to review it. Having previously read Cass' The Selection series, I was expecting to really get into this story and the characters. However, this wasn't the case as I felt disconnected to the characters and found them lacking at times.

The Betrothed is centred upon Hollis Brite, and is told entirely in her perspective, as she maneuvers through court politics, intrigue, romance, scandal, and more. In the beginning of this story, Hollis becomes the envy of every girl as their king sets his eyes on her as his future bride and queen to his country. It quickly loses my interest from there when the characters become more confused than me while reading this story.

Hollis felt a bit wishy-washy to me, as she dedicated herself to obtaining the king's attention only to quickly change her mind that she doesn't really want to be queen any more. The king, Jameson, felt too dutiful and cold. Most of the time, the characters were dull and toneless almost to the point of seeming one dimensional, it left me feeling emotionally unattached from not only the characters but also the story as a whole. Though this was a relatively quick book to read, I would have liked to have read more about the characters personality's instead of any physical attributes they may have had. An overall, alright read.
