Summary from Goodreads:
The Age of Darkness approaches.
Five lives stand in its way.
Who will stop it... or unleash it?
For generations, the Seven Prophets guided humanity. Using their visions of the future, they ended wars and united nations―until the day, one hundred years ago, when the Prophets disappeared.
All they left behind was one final, secret prophecy, foretelling an Age of Darkness and the birth of a new Prophet who could be the world’s salvation . . . or the cause of its destruction. As chaos takes hold, five souls are set on a collision course:
A prince exiled from his kingdom.
A ruthless killer known as the Pale Hand.
A once-faithful leader torn between his duty and his heart.
A reckless gambler with the power to find anything or anyone.
And a dying girl on the verge of giving up.
One of them―or all of them―could break the world. Will they be savior or destroyer?
Review
There Will Come A Darkness is the first book in what is promised to be an extraordinary fantasy series.
Set in an Ancient Greece inspired environment/background with influences from the Ancient World, the world building takes a life of its own. There Will Come A Darkness is centered around five individual characters, from all walks of life, who come together to stop an ancient evil from destroying the world. This includes: Hassan, the prince of Herat whose been exiled by his tyrant usurper who is set on wiping out his people; Jude, loyal member of the Order of the Last Light and trusted guardian,; Ephyra, a loyal sister and fierce assassin fighting for what she believes in; Beru, living on borrowed time till a cure can be found; and Anton, a gambler with a gift on the run.
With the feeling of a more mature and darker version of any typical YA fantasy, one can easily lose themselves in this story filled with intrigue. Appealing to both classic and epic fantasy readers, There Will Come A Darkness has carved a mark of its own and stands strongly amongst predecessors in the genre.
I am absolutely on board with the newest trend in YA fantasy, the group of characters that are destined to come together to accomplish something of great importance. In There Will Come A Darkness, it's to stop the apocalypse. The cast of characters were unique and extraordinary to read about. Their storylines were fun to see play out throughout the book, since they all had a different kind of personality that lit up the pages and made it seem that much more intriguing. Every single one of these characters had a distinctive voice, that made it easy to follow each of their important storylines without any sense of confusion over whose POV I was currently on.
I absolutely enjoyed reading There Will Come A Darkness from beginning to end. With a richly interwoven story, a well-developed world filled with magic, and a diverse cast of unique characters, this book promises to leave you breathlessly anticipating the next book in the series. A definite must read for anyone who enjoys reading fantasy, prophecies, and multiple characters coming together as a unit to accomplish something.
